The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced the appointment of Adrienne Camire as the new Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). In this pivotal role, Ms. Camire will be responsible for overseeing FMCSA’s mission to enhance the safety of commercial motor vehicles, improve the efficiency of the nation’s freight and passenger transportation systems, and implement essential regulatory oversight.
It’s important to note that an Acting Administrator serves temporarily and does not go through the Senate confirmation process, which is typically required for a Senate-confirmed Administrator. The FMCSA has not had a Senate-confirmed Administrator since Robin Hutcheson, who was nominated by President Biden and confirmed in 2022.
Following Hutcheson’s departure in 2023, the agency has been led by a series of Acting Administrators, including Jim Mullen and Wiley Deck, after Raymond P. Martinez served from 2018 to 2019 during the Trump Administration. Notably, Meera Joshi was nominated by President Biden but left FMCSA before securing Senate confirmation.
Ms. Camire brings a wealth of experience to her new position, with over 20 years of legal, regulatory and compliance expertise spanning both the private and academic sectors. Before her current role, she served as Chief Counsel for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) during President Trump’s first term, where she managed legal services related to the Federal-aid highway program.
Ms. Camire holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Brandeis University, as well as a Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School.
Upon her appointment, Ms. Camire expressed her commitment to FMCSA’s mission, stating, “I am honored to lead FMCSA in its mission to prevent commercial motor vehicle crashes, fatalities, and injuries on our Nation’s roads. I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to advance our shared safety goals.”
