ATRI Seeks Insights on Motor Carrier Hiring Practices: A Call to Action for Trucking Companies

Protecting your fleet has never been more affordable

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has launched a new initiative aimed at understanding hiring practices within the trucking industry, specifically focusing on the employment of truck drivers with prior criminal convictions. This survey is a vital step in addressing the workforce challenges that the trucking sector is currently facing.

Recognizing the need for innovative hiring strategies, ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC) has prioritized this study to explore underrepresented hiring pathways, including the potential of individuals with criminal histories. The survey will delve into various aspects of motor carrier hiring practices, examining decision-making factors and strategies for workforce reintegration. Additionally, participants may have the opportunity for follow-up research interviews to provide deeper insights. Importantly, all responses will be kept strictly confidential.

“As the industry continues to seek out solutions to its various workforce challenges, there is a new emphasis on the possibilities of hiring truck drivers with criminal histories.  However, there is limited data on how to successfully integrate these individuals into motor carrier operations,” said Robyn Smith, Director of Driver Relations for May Trucking Company. “ATRI’s research will provide value insight to help the industry balance safety, compliance, and workforce development.”
