Keeping Drivers Safe by Avoiding Parking Hot Spots

Protecting your fleet has never been more affordable

For the third year in a row, parking was top of mind for drivers on the American Transportation Research Institute’s 18th annual Top Industry Issues list. Though more than 70% of U.S. freight moves via trucks, there is just one parking spot for every 11 trucks on the road. It is easy to see why parking and avoiding parking “hot spots” remains a top issue.

Finding legal and safe places to park can be one of the most challenging tasks for professional drivers. There are often concerns about the time spent finding suitable and safe parking for the driver, truck and trailer. Additionally, there are safety concerns when parking in a risky area. New data shows that the most common risky areas in the U.S. are highway shoulders and ramps.

Pulled from almost 50,000 truck parking events over two weeks,* here are the top 20 dangerous hot spots:

  1. I-78/US 22 West in Greenwich Township, Pennsylvania
  1. New Jersey State Route 3 North to Lighting Way in Hudson County, New Jersey
  1. Kentucky State Route 4 West in Lexington, Kentucky
  1. I-95 South in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania
  1. I-95 South in New Castle County, Delaware
  1. I-85 South in Jefferson, Georgia
  1. I-75 North in Atlanta, Georgia
  1. U.S. Route 95 in Humboldt County, Nevada

  1. I-95/New Jersey Turnpike South in Middlesex County, New Jersey
